About this research group
Parallab has roots back to 1985 and has since then performed research, development and operations related to e-Infrastructures, high-performance computing and distributed systems. Parallab is playing a major role in the Center for Big Data Analysis, to be established in January 2015 at Uni Research. Here the staff at Parallab develops and operates a Big Data computing and storage cluster and takes part in creating interfaces to be used by both researchers and other customers.
Special emphasis is given to bridging the gap between computer science and computational sciences and between academic research and industrial needs, by undertaking multi-disciplinary research and development projects with industry and other branches of science.
As part of the national projects for High Performance Computing (the last two being NOTUR I+II from 2000 to 2014) Parallab has carried out all HPC and grid-computing activities on behalf of the University of Bergen. As such, Parallab operated the supercomputer facilities of the university and provided support to the users of these facilities, as well as operating the UiB cluster in the world-wide WLCG grid computing and storage project at CERN.
