About the project
Patients with unspecific health complaints (MUPS), prospective follow up across several years.
In this project we wish to follow patients with unspecific health complaints for several years in order to examine how these complaints change across time. Do patients worsen or do the complaints recover spontaneously, or do they finally end up with specific illnesses that may be proven by tests? Do the patients sustain at work or do they end up with long term sick leave and disability pension? Do they get sufficient help from their family doctor, or are they sent across multiple examinations in specialist care, or do they seek help at alternative providers?
MUPS (Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms) is a label on unspecific health complaints that are not proven by ordinary medical examination on imaging tests, blood tests or in other ways. It may present as pain, fatigue, numbness, dizziness etc. Most people have these complaints from time to time which recover by itself. To others these complaints may sustain across time and may lead to sickness absence or other kind of decreased function.
Patients from Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties have in 2012 and 2013 been asked by their family physician to participate in the study if they according to the doctor fulfill certain criteria for having MUPS. Those who agree to participate will receive a questionnaire at three times during the study period and also equipment for a blood test taken at the health clinic.
